Privacy Policy for the Leiden University Mentor Network website and specifically its subdomain at universiteitleiden.nl.

1.        How you can use the password protected area of Leiden University Mentor Network

Personal Information

Your ‘Profile’ is where you can enter, manage and update your data and email preferences. You may also choose to provide optional details, such as preferred name, former name, occupation, company, photos, personal web page, personal comments, etc.

You may wish to share some or all of the information held in your Profile with other site members. You are able to do this via your ‘Profile' page. The only information that is automatically visible to others on your Profile page is your preferred name, surname or maiden name, matriculation year and course at Leiden University. Additional information fields from your Profile, other personal information and photos etc. will appear only if you have opted to provide those items.

Messages

Other users of the platform are able to send private messages to you but you can choose whether or not to be notified when an email is sent. The site does not monitor messages sent between users.

Sharing information within Leiden University Mentor Network

The general online directory is designed so you can find other users easily. For this reason, you will appear in the directory with the information described in the Personal Information section (above). If you do not want to appear in the directory you can opt out upon registration or by accessing your Profile and removing data. You can also choose to share or hide certain personal and contact information.

Choice

Leiden University Mentor Network provides you with the following options which can be changed at any time:

-      to opt out of receiving emails from other users of Leiden University Mentor Network by means of a checkbox in your Profile (the default is that other users can use Leiden University Mentor Network to send you emails, though your address will never be revealed to the sender unless you choose to make it visible in your Profile);

-     to unsubscribe from Leiden University Mentor Network completely by requesting the deletion of your account.

Full opt-out

If you wish to opt out of the Leiden University Mentor Network, please contact us at mentornetwerk@leidenuniv.nl. Please note that your details will still be held on the main alumni database.

Personally identifiable information

To help confirm your identity, Leiden University Mentor Network's registration process may require you to provide authentication (such as your full name, email address, password, course, date of birth, city, province/state, country and/or postal/zip code).

2.        How we may use your information

Service management

We use the information we collect to provide services and features to you, to measure and improve those services and features, and to provide you with customer support. We may use the information to prevent activities which might breach the conditions of use of Leiden University Mentor Network. We also use a variety of technological systems to detect and address anomalous activity and screen content to prevent abuse such as spam. This may on occasion result in a temporary or permanent suspension or termination of some functions for some users.

Suggesting services

Unless you have told us otherwise, we may use your information to make suggestions that may be of interest to you. For example, if you become a mentor, we may suggest you to visit an Leiden alumni event related to mentoring. Any suggestions will be from Leiden University  or those who supply our services and administered by the Leiden University Alumni Office.

Site activity

When you access Leiden University Mentor Network from a computer, mobile phone, or other device, we may collect information from that device about your browser type, location, and IP address, as well as the pages you visit.

3.        How we protect your information

We use technical and organizational security measures to keep your information secure. But bear in mind that there are risks inherent in sharing information. Although we allow you to set privacy options that limit access to your information, please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. We cannot control the actions of other users with whom you share your information. You can reduce third party circumvention of privacy settings and security measures by using common sense security practices such as choosing a strong password, using different passwords for different services, and using up to date antivirus software.

4. How we share information

The password protected area of the site is partly about sharing information with others while providing you with settings that you can use to restrict other users from accessing your information.

LinkedIn

For those of you with a LinkedIn account, your Leiden University Mentor Network log in and LinkedIn identity can be easily connected with a single login option. If you choose to set this up, you must manually authorize Leiden University Mentor Network to receive your LinkedIn credentials and allow access. The only piece of data shared between Leiden University Mentor Network and LinkedIn is the LinkedIn ID, used for matching the two accounts. You can revoke this permission at any time.

If you choose to enable this feature, future logins to the site can be done via your LinkedIn login.
