Senior Members' Lunch

The Haileybury Society hosted its third annual Senior Members’ Lunch, at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, W1 on Tuesday 6 May.  The event was a great success, not least because of the resilient attitude of our OHs - despite planned industrial action on the London Underground, over 74 OHs together with some former staff booked to attend this popular event from a range of houses and joining years 1940 to 1974.  It is amazing to think some of those present spent their school days at Haileybury during WWII.

We were not only blessed by the industrial action being called off but also glorious weather, which enabled some OHs to have a stroll through Green Park before drinks in the Club Bar followed by a delicious lunch in the Ball Room.

With thanks to both the Master, who spoke in detail about 21st century Haileybury, and said it was a ‘delightful occasion ….. delightful people’,  and the Honorary Archivist, who gave a fascinating talk on Haileybury’s role in the formation of the Royal Flying Corp/Royal Air Force during WWI and E M  Maitland (E 1894)  who was a pioneer of military flying.  He built a plane before the war which he sold to the War Office when the WWI broke out.  He also experimented with parachutes and commanded an Airship Station in 1916.  He was later killed in R38 disaster in 1921.

We are planning events in the autumn to link with the WWI Commemorations at Haileybury.  This and further information about Society events can be found on the website pages  or by contacting us at hailsoc@haileybury.com, telephone 01992 706 348.
