Sam Billings Plays Crucial Innings as England defeat NZ in ODI series

SAM Billings played an integral role as England won the final match vs New Zealand and clinched the ODI series 3-2. The final game of the series was sadly rain affect and under the Duckworth Lewis method, England’s target to win was reduced to 192 off 26 overs. Their start was disastrous, as they slumped to 45-5. Then Sam Billings (BF 04) joined replacement wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow at the crease and the pair added a match-changing 80 for the sixth wicket [of which Billings scored 41 from just 30 balls]. Billings hit the only six of England’s innings - a majestic sweep over fine leg. Another compelling shot in the Kent player’s innings was an on-driven four in the mid on area - for much older followers this shot was reminisant of the leg-side stroke play of former England captain Peter May.

In the first three matches of the series, the Old Haileyburian scored 3, 12 and 34. His role at number seven is not an easy one; however, it is clear that Sam is looking increasingly comfortable at this level of cricket, which bodes well for the future. writes David Rimmer (Th 76)
