Leavers of 2005 return...for Steak Sandwiches and Coe red wine!!

This summer Ashley Cole, one of my Heads of School, set up a reunion for those of us who left ten years ago, with the help of my other Head of School, Will Sheldon.

It was a brilliant excuse to return to a place you love, eat great BBQ food next to an actual cricket match and catch up with old friends and inspirational teachers (Mr Jardine, Mr Matcham, and Mr Parker- legends all- attended).

We took part in an evocative tour of our old school. (Why is it that I could tell blindfold that I was back in my old house, Allenby, by its particular cosy smell? Not just that but, even after all these years, I swear, if tested, I could also identify which particular adjunct of Allenby I was in, purely by nasal intuition? Text Box: Kathryn Bishop, Ashley Coe, Helen Mallinson, Olivia Chase, Isobel Baugh, Sophie Newman, Danni Chambers, Sarah Butterfield, Lindsey El-Beigh.Why are old buildings - and buildings which are our old friends- so smell-distinctive?)

We had fun telling each other lots of stories that are largely unprintable. It’s the hidden bits of life that stay with you most. But I was also reminded that, just in general, the places that you grow up in haunt you. They are the bar by which you assess your present life. You never escape the past and, if you went to Haileybury, you do not really want to.
