OHRFC celebrates 80 years & Barry Clarke

The OHRFC 80th Anniversary lunch to commemorate the opening of their Ruxley Lane Club House, took place at the RAC Club, Pall Mall on the 25th April 2015. Approximately 130 guests attended a most marvellous lunch. In typical Haileybury tradition it was a rawcus affair. In addition to commemorating the Club House opening, the event also honoured Barry Clarke’s 85th birthday and some 65 years support of the Club as a Player, Captain and Chairman. Barry made his debut in 1949 and in an eight year playing career, cut short by injury, only missed one game through injury and not a wedding. Which considering his superb speech on the day is somewhat surprising, he must have made outstanding best man material. [perhaps OH rugby players got married on Fridays in those days?]. In one notable exchange, Barry thanked his wife SuText Box: Barry Clarke receiving a Silver Salver from OHRFC presented by Tom Huckin, Chairmansan, for her decades of understanding which received heathly applause, he then, with razor sharp wit, reminded the audience that he knew ‘…on which side his shirt was ironed on!’ which caused the room to almost combust with laughter. In the early 1970’s the Club invited honorary members to play and of the 130 in attendance three quarters were probably in that category, this became most evident when the OHs received a standing ovation of thanks and appreciation. Although not technically OHs the spirit and nature of the current players is most definitely that of the Haileyburian. The Club would once again like to extend the warmest of invitations to any OH wishing to continue their playing careers, there is a Haileybury Rugby Life after once your time at school has finished.
