Aitkens' First Published Piece

I was 13 and got paid a guinea for this contribution to the centenary edition. In those days a pound could buy you a small republic so I thought writing was the way to go. The first thing to do was get onto the shooting team. This may sound a slightly oblique approach to a noble craft  but  on sport afternoons shooters only had to spend 20 minutes down the range while cricketers had to spend four hours standing round doing whatever cricketers do…thus I had a net gain of three extra hours in the reading room and library checking out how this writing thing worked. Fortunately at nearly 112 I’m still banging out TV and film scripts. That initial bit of encouragement and reward saved me from ever having to get a proper job.  Thank you to the then editor…whoever he was...
