Chris Wyles (Tr 97)

Old Haileyburian and USA skipper Chris Wyles was left frustrated after his team led 13-6 at half-time before losing 39-16 to Scotland at Elland Road in their second World Cup pool game. The Eagles played with skill and commitment in the first half on Sunday before they paid for mistakes in the second period.

Wyles who moved to full back from the wing for the game, said: “Once again our discipline let us down and I am pretty upset with that. You cannot afford to give away points to a team like Scotland. “In the first half we were physically dominant and kept the ball. Moving forward we can take the first half as a big positive.”

This came after Wyles scored a try when the USA lost 25-16 to Samoa in their opening Pool B game.

Samoa had the edge at the Brighton Community Stadium but The Eagles scored two tries.

One came from a flowing move that saw the Wyles touch down from close range after taking a good angle.

Wyles, who plays for Saracens, said: “At times we physically matched them, but to be honest right now it's difficult to take a huge amount of positives away from that because our discipline let us down and our execution at times.

"At the end of the day we were still in a position to win that game, which is a huge positive. We were close to winning and obviously even closer to getting the bonus point (teams losing by seven points or fewer get a point in the pool stage)."

The Eagles’ next game is against South Africa at the Olympic Stadium in London on Wednesday October 7.
