New Lord-Lieutenant for Hampshire appointed

Nigel Atkinson (E 67), who attended Haileybury and ISC between 1967-1972, has been appointed Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant for the County of Hampshire. He took up the position on 12th September 2014 after 8 years as Vice Lord-Lieutenant. He is the 5th OH Lord-Lieutenant.

Nigel, from Edmonstone House, thoroughly enjoyed his time at Haileybury where he liked playing as many sports as he could together with taking an active part in the CCF. He made lifelong friends in the House and 10 of them have now started meeting up for dinner every 6 months after a 40 year gap!

After leaving school Nigelserved in the Royal Green Jackets before pursuing a business career which included Chief Executive of Gales Brewery; latterly he has held a portfolio of Non-Executive appointments, including with Capital Radio plc, Fuller Smith & Tuner plc, and Centurion Safety Products Ltd.He has been the non-executive chairman of South East Enterprise Agencies and chairman of the Order of St John in Hampshire. He continues to serve as County President of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Patron for the Rainbow Centre for Neurological Enablement, Trustee of Winchester Cathedral together with a number of other charities/organisations; he was thrilled to renew his interest in the cadet movement when he was appointed Honorary Colonel of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force in 2009.

Nigel said:'It is a privilege and an honour to be appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and I much look forward to working with the County Council, the Voluntary and charitable sector, the Armed Forces, Businesses and other important bodies to help further the interests of Hampshire in the coming years.

The Lord-Lieutenant's principal duties are to represent The Queen in  Hampshire; but his responsibilities will also include arranging visits for the Royal Family, presenting honours and awards, Vice Chairman of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace, supporting Reserve Forces and Cadets, as well encouraging charitable giving in the County.

Nigel lives near Petersfield with his wife, Christine and has 1 son and 2 daughters.
